Settle in, we’re going to talk you through each of the three key stages, so let’s get started!

What are the Three Stages of Video Production?

If you’re new to video production, or a student of the subject, then it might be helpful to know the three stages to video production. This week’s blog will take you through everything that goes into making a video: from concept to completion, so that you can happily shout ‘Action!’ knowing you know the essentials! We’ve got you covered.

Video production is a complex process that involves many different stages. Each stage is important if you want to create a polished and effective video. In general, video production can be broken down into three main stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. Let’s take a closer look at each of these stages and what they involve.

1. Pre-production

The pre-production stage is when all the planning and preparation takes place. During this stage, we establish the video’s concept, message and target audience and write the script. Pre-production also involves planning the logistics of the shoot, such as scouting locations, casting actors, and hiring crew members. Storyboarding and creating a shot list are also important pre-production tasks.

This is all essential to ensuring that the production stage runs smoothly. It also means that the final product is more likely to meet the desired outcome. It is at this stage that you must decide what you are trying to achieve with your content, who your target audience is and which platform you will post it on. If you set your clear objectives during this stage, the next two stages will run much more smoothly, and ultimately your content will perform better and will get you the results you need.

Some shoots require more pre-production time than others, but there is always a pre-production stage even if it is just a case of receiving a booking and arranging accommodation. Larger-scale shoots like the ones us Nomads have done for Icon at The O2 involve extensive pre-production planning. It was imperative on that shoot that we had secured the necessary filming permits, booked crew, hair and make up artists, and stylists and finally obtained permission from London City Airport to capture our planned drone footage.

2. Production

We film the video in the production stage. To do that involves setting up the camera and lighting and coordinating with actors and crew members, and more! During production, it’s important to capture all the necessary shots and angles to tell the story effectively, this could purely be visual-only, or could also involve interviews and/or scripted dialogue. Filming may take place on location or in a studio, depending on the video’s requirements.

We’ve filmed in all sorts of locations over the years. From luxury private charter yachts, private adventure islands off the coast of Pembrokeshire, boutique hotels, designer outlets, constructions sites to skyscrapers in London: all film shoot locations have one thing in common. There is always the need to be prepared and organised. The pre-production work at the Icon Designer Outlet at the O2 arena it meant that the production stage went really smoothly as all the necessary groundwork had been done, and we think this really shows in the final edits that we delivered.

3. Post-production

In the post-production stage editors refine and polish the raw footage into a final product.

This stage involves a range of tasks, including video editing, sound mixing, music sourcing, colour grading, and adding special effects. The goal of post-production is to create a cohesive and engaging video that effectively communicates the intended message.

At this stage, the story truly comes together as the team collates all of the best shots into the final piece. There’s all sorts of magic and wizardry that you can perform in post-production. In addition to colour grading and animation you can also correct shots. Below are Before and After images taken showing the corrective work we did in animation.  It shows still taken from our recent video footage of the roof of the O2; we blended the new roof panels into the existing ones after a huge storm ripped a whole in the roof in February 2022.

You can see the difference between the two shots is enormous and makes a considerable difference to visual appearance of the O2’s famous roof.

The final part of the post-production process is when we share the finished product with the client. We always ensure our clients are as happy as possible, and we may make a few minor adjustments to guarantee 100% satisfaction. Then we get to celebrate seeing the final video(s) posted on social media or airing on TV!

In conclusion,

Video production is a complex process that requires careful planning, execution, and refinement. By breaking the process down into these three stages, pre-production, production, and post-production, it’s easier to understand the work involved in creating a professional-quality video. Each stage is essential to the final product and requires attention to detail and dedication to craft a compelling, effective video.
